Electric technology is constantly evolving, and gas appliances are falling out of favor with consumers as a result. Electric appliances are now better performing and more energy efficient than they have ever been, while gas ranges and furnaces have seen little to no innovation in decades. The gas industry has actively resisted efficiency standards increases, which has only accelerated the decline of gas appliances.
The LED lightbulb is a great example of this steady innovation: It’s now over five times more energy-efficient than the incandescent bulb. Most electric devices have also seen significant efficiency improvements, making them a more sustainable choice for consumers.
The Department of Energy plans to raise energy efficiency standards for appliances, saving consumers billions of dollars on future utility bills. As our electricity becomes cleaner, emissions from electric appliances are decreasing. Several states have passed laws requiring electricity to be generated from 100% renewable sources in the near future, and renewables make up the majority of planned new electricity generation.
Governments are increasingly focused on policies that encourage the use of electric appliances in homes and buildings. Many policies proposed for the 2023 legislative session would prioritize building electrification.
Cities are pushing for ordinances that require all-electric new construction, and states have passed building codes requiring all-electric construction for new buildings. In the California Bay Area, gas appliances will no longer be sold, starting with gas water heaters, in 2027.
All of us can be part of this trend toward high-efficiency, modern electric appliances, avoid the increasing costs and negative health and environmental impacts of gas, and help transform our energy systems through our choices in our homes.
Here are some tips on how to electrify your home:
- Start by replacing your gas furnace with an electric heat pump.
- Install solar panels on your roof to generate your own electricity.
- Switch to an electric stovetop and oven.
- Replace your gas water heater with an electric one.
- Install energy-efficient appliances and light bulbs.
- Weatherize your home to reduce energy use.
- Take advantage of government incentives and rebates for energy-efficient improvements.

Could Vermont Gas Systems be a Model for the Future?
A new study shows that gas utility plans to rely on alternative fuels are not feasible and that even a modest decrease in the number of consumers who leave the gas system could cause gas rates to quadruple by 2040. Clearly, figuring out how to decarbonize the gas system equitably is a major concern.
Vermont Gas Systems (VGS) is finding ways to use electrification to reduce carbon emissions while maintaining a relevant business. They hope to do this by delivering residential and commercial heating. Could this be a model for other gas utilities to follow as we transition away from fossil fuels?
VGS is working on a number of initiatives geared toward promoting electrification, including:
- Developing a plan to transition its customers to all-electric heating by 2050
- Investing in research and development of new electric heating technologies
- Partnering with local governments and businesses to promote electrification
VGS’s efforts could be a model for other gas utilities as they transition away from fossil fuels. By embracing electrification, VGS can help reduce emissions, save customers money, and create jobs in the clean energy sector. California and other states can use VGS as a great example.
