Summer is just around the corner! With warmer weather on the horizon, you’ll want to make sure that your home stays as cool as possible. It’s the perfect time to start your annual spring-cleaning binge. Take a look at our helpful “to-do” list for preparing your home summer weather.
Inspect Your Home’s HVAC System
Test your air conditioning unit to make sure it’s working properly. Check your filters and replace them if they seem dirty. It is best to replace your filters every 3 months.
Monitor your home’s thermostat levels for accuracy, and be sure to have fresh batteries installed in your thermostat if yours contains batteries. It is good to replace these once a year.
Even if things seem to be running smoothly, it’s a good idea to have your system inspected at least once a year, as well as tuned up so it stays as clean and efficient as possible.
Clean Your Gutters
Plenty of leaves, dirt, and other forms of debris clog up your gutters after a long winter. As those spring showers start to arrive, you need to make sure that water can drain properly from the roof of your house. If it doesn’t, water can seep into the walls and roof and cause severe damage to your home’s structure. Grab a ladder and a durable pair of gloves and start cleaning. For many homeowners, this can be a dreaded chore. If you clean your gutters at least twice a year, it should be a fairly painless process.
Double-check Insulation
During the sweltering months ahead, you’ll want to keep the hot air out. Look for any holes or tears in your window’s seals and your door’s protective lining. This can also save you tons of money on air conditioning by keeping the cool air inside. If you notice any issues, you can easily and cheaply buy new weather seals at your local hardware store and install them throughout the house. Or try applying a new layer of silicon caulking or sealant to your windows and doorways.
Replace old light bulbs with CFL bulbs
CFL blubs are known for giving off less heat than other types of bulbs. This small trick will help your home stay far cooler, especially at night. Additionally, from your perspective below, make sure that your ceiling fans are running counter clockwise. In the summer, you want air to blow downward to keep the room cool.
Summer will be a breeze if you start preparing your home for warmer weather now. You’ll be able to relax with peace of mind and enjoy a cooler interior.
